USAG Daegu Winter/Holiday Safety Guide

DAEGU GARRISON, Republic of Korea - This is a time of year to recall the many blessing we enjoy as Families, members of IMCOM-Korea and as a Nation. Regardless of how you choose to spend this special season, take time to recommit yourself to the challenges 2010 will bring.

Make safety a top priority in all you do. Winter weather conditions, increased holiday traffic and extended hours of darkness will increase driving risks. Privately owned vehicle (POV) accidents continue to hold "first place" over all accident categories. During fiscal year 2009 the Army experienced 111 off-duty class A POV accidents resulting in 109 fatalities.

Proactive one-on-one engagement by Commanders, Non-Commissioned Officers, Division Chiefs and first-line supervisors will reduce risks and prevent acidents throughout the holiday season. Ensure all assigned Soldiers and Civilians have completed the training required by the IMCOM-Korea 2009/2010 Winter Safety Campaign (OPORD 09-222). Pre-holiday safety briefings should stress the importance of trip planning, weather conditions, risks of speeding and driver fatigue. If you consume alcohol, do it responsibly and don't drink and drive! Remind everyone to buckle-up and ensure children are properly secured in an approved child safety seat. Commanders will ensure Soldiers use the risk assessment tool (TRiPS) found on the Combat Readiness Center Website.

Accidental fires are an increased risk this time of year. Be especially alert to hazards associated with space heaters, carbon monoxide poisoning, candles and holiday tree lighting. Candles are a leading cause of home fires and are not authorized in barracks.

I thank all of you for your hard work that made 2009 a successful year. From our Family to yours, we wish you a joyous holiday season and all the best for a healthy and prosperous New Year.
